Navigating the added value and potential pitfalls of exit exams: Insights from students

Abstract

The primary purpose of this study is to explore how students perceive the significance of the exit exam and the pitfalls that hinder their performance. A qualitative research approach was employed, specifically utilizing narrative inquiry. Data were collected using unstructured interviews with eleven students who took the exit exam at Ambo University. Data analysis was performed using an inductive thematic approach. The findings revealed that participants have a positive view of the exit exam and consider it a valuable step toward improving the quality of education. However, students’ performance is influenced by system, institutional, and student-related factors. The results of this study have implications for stakeholders in the education sector in improving the quality of the exit exam and student performance. It is recommended that there be an accurate alignment between the test blueprint and the exam content to ensure that the assessment accurately reflects the intended learning outcomes, while taking into account the needs of students with special needs by providing appropriate accommodations to create an inclusive and fair testing environment.
