Background Multislice computed tomography (MSCT) is the preferred modality in imaging of the retroperitoneum. It offers improved image quality and significantly quicker scanning times, as well as discrete sectional images of the organs and retroperitoneal compartments. Aim The objective of this work was to assess the role of MSCT in the detection and differentiation of retroperitoneal cystic lesions and its correlation with surgical and histopathological data. Patients and methods This prospective study was carried out on 30 participants (12 males, 18 females), both sexes, with retroperitoneal cystic lesions. All patients were subjected to MSCT and computed tomography (CT). Results There was a significant relation between histological and CT enhancement and consistency (cystic or mixed cystic and solid lesion) ( P <0.05). The diagnostic accuracy of MSCT imaging for differentiation of the neoplastic and nonneoplastic and benign and malignant lesions show, respectively, the sensitivity was 94.44 and 100%, while specificity was 100.0 and 87.5%, and accuracy was 95.0 and 94.12%. Conclusions MSCT possesses unique features and benefits that allow accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity in the diagnosis and differentiation of retroperitoneal lesions. Multidetector CT is one of the main image studies in the diagnosis and staging of different retroperitoneal tumors and tumor recurrence.
