Wind energy is in high demand globally. It’s a renewable, clean, and ecologically friendly source of energy that can help tackle greenhouse gas emissions. However, the development of wind motor drives and control has been limited due to the absence of a simple and flexible experimental test rig. This paper introduces the design, control, and construction of a Wind Turbine Emulator (WTE) test rig. The WTE test rig consists of a three-phase induction motor acting as a wind turbine emulator, connected to a permanent magnet synchronous generator. Both machines are controlled by a central Electronic Control Unit (ECU) housing digital signal processing (DSP), converters, microcontrollers, filters, and Controllers (Machine-side and Grid-side), as well as a DC-link. The ECU drives both machines. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the test rig as a wind turbine emulator. It serves as a valuable educational learning tool and an experimental test bench for further research and developing new control and drive algorithms.
