Mobile health applications for disease management in rural areas: A systematic review

Abstract

Mobile health (mHealth) applications offer a transformative approach to disease management, particularly in rural areas where healthcare resources are often limited. This systematic review explores the role of mHealth applications in enhancing disease management in rural settings, focusing on their effectiveness, challenges, and potential benefits. The review systematically assesses the literature on mHealth applications designed for disease management in rural areas, highlighting key findings from various studies. The review reveals that mHealth applications can significantly improve access to healthcare services, enable remote monitoring, and facilitate timely interventions. These applications often include features such as symptom tracking, medication reminders, health education, and telemedicine capabilities, which collectively enhance disease management and patient outcomes. For instance, apps designed for chronic disease management, such as diabetes and hypertension, offer tools for self-monitoring and personalized feedback, thereby improving patient adherence to treatment regimens and fostering better disease control. However, the review also identifies several challenges associated with the implementation of mHealth applications in rural areas. Key issues include limited internet access, variability in digital literacy, and concerns about data privacy and security. The effectiveness of mHealth applications is often constrained by these factors, highlighting the need for tailored solutions that address the unique needs of rural populations. Despite these challenges, the review underscores the potential of mHealth applications to bridge gaps in healthcare delivery in rural areas. By providing scalable and accessible solutions, these applications have the potential to enhance disease management and improve health outcomes in underserved regions. Future research should focus on developing context-specific applications that address the barriers identified and exploring strategies for effective integration into existing healthcare systems. Overall, mHealth applications represent a promising avenue for advancing disease management in rural areas, with the potential to significantly impact public health.
