Mapping and Zoning of Flood Hazard: Case Study of the Ouad Lahdar Valley at the Meknassa Al Gharbiya Territorial Center, Upper Inaouene, Morocco (Application of the Hydrogeomorphological Method)

Abstract

The present study aims to map flood hazard in the Ouad valley, specifically focusing on the Meknassa El Gharbiya Territorial Center (the downstream part of the Ouad Lahdar watershed). This approach relies on the application of the hydrogeomorphological method, whose results have been validated and adopted in other countries. The study refers to the 2010 flood, considered the most devastating and causing considerable damage. It utilizes data from photo interpretation, satellite image analysis, as well as field observations and surveys. Following its application in the Ouad Lahdar watershed, where it yielded promising results, the study seeks to delineate flood-prone areas in the Ouad valley, at the level of the Meknassa El Gharbiya Territorial Center. Additionally, it aims to identify dynamics influencing the various documented flood beds. This approach underscores the importance of a thorough understanding of the processes governing the evolution of the alluvial plain for accurate assessment of flood risks in each territory. Flood risks in the alluvial plain of the Ouad Lahdar vary according to the characteristics of the different geomorphological units present in this area.
