Local Economic Development as a Catalyst for Agricultural Growth and Poverty Relief Strategy

Abstract

In rural South Africa, the enduring legacies of apartheid, including poverty and limited opportunities, persist. This chapter delves into how agriculture can drive local economic growth and development, despite challenges like resource scarcity and inadequate infrastructure. It explores how leveraging agriculture can alleviate poverty. Drawing on theories like systems theory and community-based development, it examines interventions to uplift rural communities. Using a mixed-method approach with an interpretive paradigm and an exploratory design, the chapter conducts a systematic review of secondary data sources, including scholarly publications and official government documents. Despite persistent challenges, findings indicate governmental efforts to support informal and smallholder farmers in enhancing their livelihoods and contributing to LED. Government support for small farmers is acknowledged, but obstacles remain. The chapter emphasizes stakeholder collaboration to enhance skills, infrastructure, and community empowerment for sustainable development.
