Lived Experiences of Sexual Dysfunction Following Chemotherapy in Nigeria: A Descriptive Phenomenological Study Using In‑Depth Interviews at a Tertiary Hospital

Abstract

The question this study addressed. This qualitative study explored the lived experiences of sexual dysfunction among 10 Nigerian cancer survivors who had completed chemotherapy within the previous three months. What this study adds to our knowledge. It shows that 8 out of 10 participants experienced significant sexual problems. Loss of libido, pain during intercourse (women) and erectile failure (men) were the most common. Emotional impacts – sadness, loss of self‑confidence, fear of rejection – were profound. Even with supportive partners, many survivors felt disconnected and withdrew from social life. This publication is available in full in Health Research in Africa.
