Linking environmental chemistry‐based pollution metrics with corporate sustainability performance indicators: A systematic review

Abstract Linking environmental chemistry pollution metrics with corporate sustainability indicators remains a critical challenge. This systematic review examines methods connecting chemistry‐based metrics, including hazard assessments, exposure models and life‐cycle impacts, with corporate indicators such as ESG scores and operational KPIs. We searched Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, Business Source Complete and GreenFILE for literature from January 2018 to March 2026. Screening 1247 records and assessing 89 full texts yielded 33 studies meeting inclusion criteria. Linkage approaches cluster into three categories: direct mapping protocols, model‐based integration frameworks, and governance‐mediated translation mechanisms. Evidence strength varies considerably with robust validation concentrated in carbon footprint applications while novel chemical entities remain underexplored. We propose a three‐layer integration model with scientific foundation, translation protocol, and governance interface to guide metric development. Harmonized data standards, interoperable infrastructure and cross‐disciplinary collaboration are essential for credible links between pollution science and corporate accountability. Explicit evidence tier labeling in sustainability disclosures is recommended to prevent overclaiming.
