In plain language

Management control is shifting under digital transformation, with artificial intelligence increasingly influencing organisational performance and strategic choices. This study examines how integrating artificial intelligence into management control affects operational efficiency, decision-making processes, and broader organisational results within small and medium-sized enterprises in Morocco. Drawing on survey responses from 82 management controllers connected to 82 Moroccan enterprises, the investigation evaluates adoption levels, administrative readiness, and performance outcomes. The findings demonstrate that greater integration of artificial intelligence meaningfully explains higher performance in management control and improved decision-making quality. Furthermore, organisational and administrative readiness plays a vital part in realising these gains. However, achieving the full advantages of these tools requires adequate financial resources alongside structured staff training, ensuring that internal teams possess the capabilities necessary to support new technologies effectively.

Key takeaways

  • Artificial intelligence adoption significantly enhances management control performance and decision-making quality in Moroccan small and medium-sized enterprises.
  • Administrative readiness is a crucial factor for maximising the organisational benefits derived from artificial intelligence tools.
  • Realising the full value of artificial intelligence requires dedicated budgetary resources and comprehensive staff training.

Why it matters

Small and medium-sized enterprises often face tight competitive and operational constraints. Understanding how digital tools influence internal controls and strategic choices helps business leaders allocate scarce resources effectively. The findings highlight that technology alone does not guarantee success, demonstrating that administrative preparation and workforce development are equally critical for companies seeking to modernise their management systems.

Commercialisation angle

The research provides practical guidance for enterprise software providers, business consultants, and management teams in small and medium-sized enterprises seeking to deploy artificial intelligence for decision support. As an empirical survey evaluating existing practices across 82 firms, it offers applied insights rather than a direct software product. Effective real-world application requires vendors and adopting firms to bundle technology implementation with tailored training programmes and administrative restructuring.
