Lateral Window Approach Versus <scp>MESS</scp> for Retrieval of Displaced Dental Objects in the Maxillary Sinus

Abstract

ABSTRACT Introduction Dental objects displaced to FESS‐inaccessible regions represent a typical indication for the lateral window approach (LWA) or modified endoscopic sinus surgery (MESS). The current study aimed to compare both techniques. Subjects and Methods A total of 52 patients with displaced dental objects in the sinus were randomly divided into two groups. In the control group, LWA was performed, followed by sinus packing, which was removed trans‐orally after 24 h. In the study group, MESS was employed by creating a lateral window and using an endoscope for illumination and instrumentation without packing. Results Both groups achieved a 100% success rate. Significant improvements in signs and symptoms from pre‐ to post‐operative were observed in both groups, as evidenced by SNOT‐22 scores and Lund and Mackay CT scan scores. Although MESS showed a smoother postoperative period at 2 weeks, LWA was shorter and easier. Conclusion Although MESS was a single‐stage surgery that did not involve packing, LWA proved to be easier, faster, and more economical and did not require specialised instruments. Therefore, MESS did not provide significant advantages over LWA, and both approaches were found to be effective.
