Introduction to Biomedical Implants and Corrosion

Abstract

Biomedical implants are critical medical devices used to treat a wide range of health issues, from orthopedic injuries to cardiovascular diseases. However, these implants are prone to corrosion, which might jeopardize their structural integrity and biocompatibility, resulting in negative impacts on patient health. This chapter gives an overview of biomedical implants and corrosion, including the many types of implants, common corrosion mechanisms, factors influencing corrosion behavior, and the significance of biocompatibility. Case examples are offered to demonstrate real-world corrosion difficulties in implants, emphasizing the importance of appropriate corrosion prevention and control measures. Overall, this chapter provides a solid foundation for understanding the intricate relationship between biomedical implants and corrosion, as well as the implications for clinical practice and patient care.
