In Vitro and In Vivo Effects of Three Phosphite-Based Fungicides on Botrytis Cinerea and Verticillium Dahliae, Tomato Pathogens

Abstract

Exploiting the potential of potassium phosphite as an alternative fungicide for the control of fungal diseases in the cultivation of tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum) in Morocco, this study is part of the search for sustainable solutions for the market gardening sector. The results showed the promising efficacy of potassium phosphite against Verticillium dahliae and Botrytis cinerea, pathogens responsible for verticilliosis and grey rot, respectively, of tomatoes. In vitro assays demonstrated the significant inhibitory effect of the three phosphite formulations tested on mycelial growth and sporulation of Botrytis cinerea. Encouraging results have also been obtained against Verticillium dahliae, especially from 500 ppm. The in vivo assay confirmed the efficacy of potassium phosphite, with a curative treatment exceeding the preventive treatment against Verticillium dahliae. These results suggest that potassium phosphite could be a durable alternative to traditional chemical fungicides, thus contributing to a more reasoned management of fungal diseases in tomato culture.
