Improved MPPT algorithm for grid-connected PV system

Abstract

The grid-connected PV systems (GCPVS) require a high-performing Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithm for superior power injection into the grid with minimal losses and reduced Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). Perturb & Observe (P&O) and Incremental Conductance (INC) are the most popular MPPTs in the field due to their ease of implementation and inferior cost. Still, they suffer from high oscillations, slow response time, and increased THD, leading finally to significant power losses. This paper proposes an improved P&O algorithm to overcome the limitations of conventional MPPTs. A comparative study between the suggested MPPT and P&O algorithm is presented to demonstrate the validity of the proposed control technique.
