Impact of Implementing Lean Principles on the Tendering efficiency in Egypt: a systematic literature review

Abstract

Despite the significance of lean construction concepts, techniques, and implementation stages in the tendering process within the construction industry, there is a noticeable scarcity of academic literature addressing lean practices, overlapping authority, and stakeholder interactions. This study aims to assess the impact of lean principles on the efficiency of construction project tendering. A review of over 40 journal articles published up to 2024 was conducted, focusing on academic literature related to construction, lean principles, and tendering. The paper examines research trends, identifies gaps in the existing literature, and proposes potential directions for future studies. The findings indicate that the primary challenge in implementing lean principles in tendering, particularly in Egypt, is the absence of a structured framework to support efficient tendering through lean thinking. Additionally, the study highlights two key issues: the limited research efforts in this area and the lack of a clear understanding and defined objectives of lean thinking among key stakeholders during the tendering process. This review aims to provide researchers with valuable insights into priority areas for further investigation and offer guidance on addressing the challenges associated with integrating lean construction principles to enhance efficiency in the tendering phase.
