Health awareness package to enhance family knowledge and healthy practices regarding household waste management

Abstract

Household waste management is a major public health concern in the community and closely related to daily human life. Community people can play a pivotal role in managing household waste management. Aim: The study aimed to evaluate the effect of health awareness package to enhance family knowledge and healthy practices regarding household waste management. Design: a quasi-experimental design was used. Setting: the study was conducted at El-Sheikh Makram Village, Sohag governorate. Sample: Simple random sample was included 110 families Overall, 2% of the total number of families was recruited in this study. Tool I: A structured interview questionnaire form to assess characteristics of families, family home assessment, knowledge and reported practice regarding household waste management &Tool II: families’ awareness Likert scale to assess level of families' awareness regarding household waste management. Results: This study clarified that, there was a marked improvement in the total knowledge level, reported practices and highly awareness regarding household waste management post implementation of the health awareness package with highly statistically significant differences between pre & post package program. Also, there was a highly statistical significant positive correlation between total knowledge, reported practices & awareness of families at P<0.000. Conclusion: health awareness package improved the families’ knowledge, reported practices and their awareness regarding household waste management. Recommendations: apply a continuous health awareness package for families to improve the households that should conceive appropriate waste disposal practices as a crusade against poor living environment so they need to be educated on efficient waste disposal practices at home
