Greenhouse Energy Saving with a Wind Turbine-Battery-Powered Watering Pump

Abstract

This study investigates the energy saving and environmental benefits of using a wind turbine-battery-powered watering pump in greenhouse irrigation systems. By harnessing renewable wind energy, this approach significantly reduces the dependence on grid electricity and fossil fuels, resulting in substantial energy saving and a lower carbon footprint. The setup includes a wind turbine to generate electrical energy, a battery storage unit to ensure a steady energy supply, and advanced variable speed energy-efficient pumps to optimize the water delivery. Through analysis, we demonstrate that a wind-battery-powered greenhouse can achieve energy saving, entirely offsetting its irrigation energy requirements. Additionally, the variable speed system contributes to reduce the energy consumption by matching the pump speed to the irrigation demand. This innovative approach not only enhances the energy efficiency and environmental sustainability but also provides economic benefits by lowering the operational costs. The findings highlight the potential of integrating wind-powered and energy-efficient technologies in agricultural practices to foster the sustainable development and energy resilience.
