Evaluation of Users’ Satisfaction with Landscape Design Features in Selected Resort Centres in Southwest Nigeria

Abstract

This study evaluated users’ satisfaction with landscape design features in selected resort centres in Southwest Nigeria. The study adopted a mixed-methods design that combined field observation, structured questionnaires and key informant interviews. A total of 356 questionnaires were administered to resort users across six resort centres, while managers and landscape personnel provided qualitative insights. Descriptive statistics and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to analyse the data. The findings show that the resorts possess a broad range of landscape elements, with trees and ornamental vegetation (89.6%), lawns and open green spaces (86.0%), and pedestrian walkways (82.0%) being the most common features. Overall assessment of the landscape design was moderate (grand mean MWV = 3.26), with maintenance recording the lowest rating (MWV = 2.97). Users’ satisfaction was also moderate (grand mean MWV = 3.20), driven mainly by scenic beauty, natural shade and fresh air, but constrained by weak plant diversity, thermal discomfort and insufficient shaded areas. Cleanliness (MWV = 3.66), maintenance (MWV = 3.60) and accessibility (MWV = 3.54) were the strongest determinants of satisfaction. ANOVA results showed significant differences across resorts in both landscape assessment (F = 4.127, p = 0.003) and satisfaction factors (F = 4.384, p = 0.002). The study concludes that resort landscapes perform best when visual quality, comfort, circulation and maintenance are treated as an integrated design system.
