Ethical Considerations in Generative Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare

Abstract

A computer or piece of software with artificial intelligence (AI) can mimic human intellect in many ways, including solving problems effectively, learning from past mistakes, absorbing new information based on its own experiences, and performing complex computations. From its very beginnings, AI has transformed the medical industry. It has speeded up processes, improved access and data storage for healthcare organizations, enhanced the cognitive abilities of physicians, and revolutionized medical imaging, electronic medical records (EMR), laboratory diagnosis, treatment methods, and new drug discovery. It has also made treatment more precise and proactive, improved laboratory diagnostics, and improved laboratory imaging. This chapter presents the ethical and legal obstacles that this scientific field must overcome. Although various groups in the field have made great strides in AI and its ability to improve the therapeutic process, it is still out of reach for some civilizations. Many developing and impoverished nations still lack access to state-of-the-art technologies. The chapter focuses on utilization of AI and presents several hurdles, which include privacy, informed permission concerns, ethical dilemmas, societal disparities, data protection issues, medical consultation obstacles, and the need for understanding and sympathy. Hence, prior to incorporating AI into the healthcare system, healthcare professionals and experts should thoroughly contemplate across all domains of healthcare that adherence to the four fundamental principles of medical ethics is essential: autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and fairness. Hence, this chapter will examine the diverse ethical considerations surrounding the implementation of AI in the healthcare sector.
