Enhancing MPR Selection in Ad Hoc Networks Through Balanced Neighbor Distribution

Abstract

The Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) protocol is a proactive routing protocol designed for mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) that utilizes the multi-point relay (MPR) mechanism to reduce the number of packets transmitted during the broadcasting process. However, the standard OLSR protocol often faces limitations due to its reliance on basic MPR selection algorithms, which can impact quality of service as MANETs grow in size and dynamism. To address this, we propose an enhanced MPR selection algorithm that integrates spatial distribution metrics, prioritizing nodes with neighbors distributed across a maximum of regions surrounding each MPR candidate. This approach aims to improve network stability by selecting MPRs with a balanced neighbor distribution, thereby strengthening OLSR protocol performance in high-mobility scenarios. Our simulations in NS2 show a significant improvement in the quality of generated MPRs when neighbors are distributed across all regions, contributing to better overall network performance and reliability.
