Enhancing halal entrepreneurial intention: The impact of halal entrepreneurship education and halal entrepreneurial awareness

Abstract

With the increasing desire to integrate Islamic values into business domains, accompanied by a shift towards more ethical business conduct, the need for preparing Halal entrepreneurs becomes paramount. This study examines the direct and indirect relationships between Halal entrepreneurship education and Halal entrepreneurial intention through Halal entrepreneurial awareness. Data were collected from 163 business students at the university level in Tanzania through a structured questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed by using a partial least squares structural equation modeling. The findings reveal that Halal entrepreneurship education has a positive and significant effect on Halal entrepreneurial intention. Furthermore, Halal entrepreneurship education significantly influences Halal entrepreneurial awareness. Halal entrepreneurial awareness significantly influences Halal entrepreneurial intention. Also, Halal entrepreneurial awareness partially mediates the relationship between Halal entrepreneurship education and Halal entrepreneurial intention. The study's findings provide a wake-up call for higher education institutions to consider the integration of Halal entrepreneurship education as a means of preparing Halal entrepreneurs for the potential of establishing Halal businesses. Several relevant implications are also provided by the study for academics, policymakers, and students at higher education institutions. • The study examines relationships between Halal entrepreneurship education, awareness, and intention. • Halal entrepreneurship education positively affects Halal entrepreneurial intention. • Halal entrepreneurship education also significantly influences Halal entrepreneurial awareness. • Halal entrepreneurial awareness positively impacts Halal entrepreneurial intention. • Halal entrepreneurial awareness partially mediates the relationship.
