Energy-Efficient Scheduling Issues With Various Maintenance Activities in Industry 4.0

Abstract

Today's manufacturing industry consumes a substantial amount of energy, so controlling energy usage and improving energy efficiency in Industry 4.0 are key priorities, both for the environment and for the competitiveness of our industry. At the same time, manufacturing industries, particularly energy-intensive ones, are placing increasing emphasis on reducing energy consumption. In this respect, energy-saving programming has proved effective in reducing energy consumption. In this context, this article focuses on the Industry 4.0 issues of coordinated scheduling of production and preventive maintenance activities over fixed and flexible periods, with a view to minimizing total energy consumption. In our study, we examine both types of unavailability constraints. We propose two models based on mixed-integer binary programming to determine optimum schedules, respectively. We evaluate the effectiveness of these two types of programming in mixed integer binary form using exact data separation B&B method and seamless evaluation using the CPLEX software.
