In this study, the electromagnetic performance comparison of the laminated-rotor and segmented-rotor double-stator wound-field flux switching machines (LR-DSWFFSM versus SR-DSWFFSM) is proposed. The comparison is necessary to understand the advantages and trade-offs of the proposed machines for exploring high torque density magnet-free machines in addressing concerns related to high cost, demagnetization risks and overreliance of rare-earth metals. The transient finite element analysis (FEA) technique is employed in the study. The results show that the LR-DSWFFSM outperforms the SR-DSWFFSM in terms of 16.3% higher back-EMF, 10.2% higher torque and 352.7% lower torque ripple. However, the latter exhibits slightly higher efficiency. These findings highlight the advantages of the LR-machine in achieving high torque density and improved performance for magnet-free/magnetless and brushless wound-field machines.
