Efficacy of Educational Package on Oncology Nurses’ Knowledge and Attitude towards Oocyte Cryopreservation

Abstract

Background: Oocyte cryopreservation is a boon in the field of assisted reproductive technology (ART). It is a well-liked, safe, and effective way to avoid age-related declines in fertility and to have biological children in the future for cancer patients. Its use is expanding rapidly for a variety of ethical, legal, social, and medical purposes. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of educational package on oncology nurses’ knowledge and attitude towards oocyte cryopreservation. Research Design: A quasi-experimental research design with (pretest, posttest and follow up) was used. Setting: The present study was conducted at the oncology & radiology units at Zagazig University hospitals. Subjects: Convenient samples of 42 nurses working in the previously mentioned settings were recruited in the study. Tools of data collection: Four tools were used: Tool I: A structured interviewing questionnaire. Tool II: Nurses' Knowledge Assessment Questionnaire. Tool III: Nurses' attitude assessment tool toward oocyte cryopreservation and Tool IV: Nurses Satisfaction Scale. Results: Indicated that there were highly statistically significant variations in the examined nurses' fundamental knowledge and attitude pre, post intervention, and throughout the follow-up phase. Conclusions: The educational packageispositively significantly affected on oncology nurses’ knowledge and attitude towards oocyte cryopreservation. Recommendations: In-service continuing education for nurses working in fertility and oncology centers should include oocyte cryopreservation as a topic to enhance their knowledge, attitude, and communication skills when interacting with female cancer patients who might have delicate inquiries regarding fertility preservation techniques.
