An assessment of healthcare financing in Cameroon reveals a positive and significant relationship between out-of-pocket medical expenditure and household economic welfare. Using survey data from the 2018 Cameroon Demographic Health Survey, the analysis measures healthcare financing through self-medical payments and household welfare via a wealth index. A quantitative survey design incorporating a control function approach was applied to examine this relationship. The findings suggest that direct spending on healthcare correlates with higher household wealth levels. In response, policy guidance focuses on two key interventions: encouraging households to adopt preventive healthcare services to limit future medical costs, and urging the government to steadily expand the proportion of the public budget dedicated to the health sector.
Understanding how families fund medical treatments helps governments identify the direct economic consequences of medical costs on family prosperity. By demonstrating the link between out-of-pocket spending and household welfare, this analysis informs national healthcare funding strategies, underscoring the necessity of public health investment and the promotion of preventive care to reduce financial vulnerability.

The findings represent early-stage empirical policy research intended primarily for government decision-makers and public health planners designing national health financing frameworks and preventive healthcare campaigns.

Secondary data is gotten from the fifth round of the Cameroon Demographic Health Survey conducted in 2018. The dataset has information on healthcare financing and it is captured through out of pocket health payment reflected in the dataset as self-medical while household economic welfare is captured as wealth index. This study adopts a quantitative research design specifically survey research design. Control function approach was used to establish a link between healthcare financing and household economic welfare. The result reveals a positive and significant effect of healthcare financing through out-of-pocket on household economic welfare in Cameroon. Policy suggests that, decision makers should sensitize households to take advantage of preventive healthcare services to avoid costly medical treatments in the future. The government should continuously increase the percentage of budget allocated for health.
