Background: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a heterogeneous endocrine disorder affect woman in reproductive age.Purpose: To investigate and trace how ultraviolet light affect serum vitamin D level and ovarian follicle size in obese females with polycystic ovarian syndrome.Materials and Methods: A randomized controlled trial was carried out. Thirty obese females were diagnosed as polycystic ovarian syndrome patients ranging between the ages of 25 & 35 were divided into two equal groups (A&B). For three months, group (A) got ultraviolet radiation (3 sessions per week), along with a low-calorie diet while group (B) received the same low-calorie diet as group (A) only. Every two weeks, the dietary plan was changed for all participants in the study. The follicular size was measured using ultrasound, while serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (active form of vitamin D) levels were measured using blood analysis tests. Before starting treatment program, investigation of all women was carried out in the two groups (A&B) and at the end of this study (after 3 months). Results: According to statistical analysis follicular size and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels were considerably increased (P=0.0001) in group (A) after three months of treatment.Conclusions: In obese polycystic ovarian women, ultraviolet therapy is an efficient, non-invasive, and safe therapy for enhancing ovulation and growing follicular size.
