Effect of Implementing an Educational Program about Scoliosis on the Knowledge of Governmental preparatory School Students and School Personnel in Alexandria.

Abstract

Background: Early detection of scoliosis is crucial to prevent curve progression andavoid invasive treatment. As the condition often presents without symptoms in its initialstages, regular screening and clinical vigilance are essential. Early identification allowsfor timely conservative management, improving outcomes and enhancing the quality oflife for af ected individuals. Aim: this study to assess the ef ect of an educationalprogram about scoliosis on the students’ and school personnel’s knowledge. Design: Aquasi-experimental study design was adopted to carry out this study. Settings: The studywas carried out in Eight preparatory governmental schools from educational districtsaf iliated to Ministry of education in Alexandria were selected randomly. Subject:1500preparatory school students enrolled in first educational year and 80 school personnelfrom dif erent eight schools in educational districts (main teachers, physical educationteacher and available school health nurse).Tools: five tools were used; Tool (I) Students’ basic data structured interview sheet, tool (II) Body mass index-for-age percentiles (2-20years), tool (III) Adam’s forward bending test, tool (IV) Students' knowledge aboutscoliosis structured questionnaire sheet, and tool (V) School personnel' knowledge aboutscoliosis structured questionnaire. Results: The findings of the present study revealedthat there was statistically significant dif erence between both students' and schoolpersonnel' knowledge levels before and after the scoliosis educational program. Conclusion The implementation of the scoliosis educational program leads to improvedtotal knowledge scoring among the studied students and school personnel. Recommendations: Developing comprehensive coordination between educationalinstitutions and health insurance institutions to raise students' and school personnel’sscoliosis awareness programs into the school health curriculum to educate studentsabout spinal health and suitable posture. Establish a national school-based scoliosisscreening program for early detection and management.
