Editorial Comments: Nigerian Journal of Ophthalmology, January–April 2025

Abstract

We welcome our readers to the 33rd volume of the Nigerian Journal of Ophthalmology. This issue presents a mixture of articles from different subspecialties of Ophthalmology. In the article by Ezeh et al., they reported a 5-year review of the prevalence and types of corneal disorders in a teaching hospital in South-South Nigeria. Their findings demonstrate the significant contribution of corneal disorders to visual impairment in our environment and portray the need for strengthening eye health prevention and promotion strategies that are aimed towards reducing corneal blindness.[1] In another original article, focus was on ophthalmic training and education. Onwuasoanya and Udeh assessed the impact of a 1-day training on the ophthalmic knowledge of physicians at the family medicine clinic. They reported a statistically significant increase in the knowledge scores of the non-ophthalmic resident doctors and medical officers following the training. This emphasizes the importance of the quality and depth of ophthalmic training for medical students as well as the need for continuous ophthalmic education programmes for non-ophthalmic physicians. The unceasing relevance of monitoring the quality of cataract surgery services is brought to the fore in the study reported by Umeh et al. They evaluated patient satisfaction using the Catquest-9 short form questionnaire and observed an improvement in satisfaction scores after cataract surgery with a corresponding improvement in visual acuity. This is additional evidence that should encourage all ophthalmic surgeons as well as eye care facilities that provide cataract surgery to continuously monitor their outcomes in order to ensure optimal quality of care for patients undergoing cataract surgery.[2] Kumari et al. in an interventional study found that tacrolimus 0.03% ointment appeared to be more effective than 0.05% cyclosporine drops in the treatment of subepithelial infiltrates associated with adenoviral keratoconjunctivitis. Although they recommend further clinical trials using various concentrations, different formulations and different duration of use of both medications, their study shows the efficacy of such treatment in preventing long-term ocular morbidity that may be associated with adenoviral keratoconjunctivitis.[2] Finally, Ademola-Popoola et al. reported the successful management of a case of postoperative endophthalmitis following cataract surgery. Their report underscores the importance of adequate patient counselling, prompt presentation, clinical evaluation, ultrasound guidance, as well as appropriate and timely intervention in the achievement of a good outcome. These and other articles are presented in this issue for the reading pleasure of our valued subscribers and readers.
