Abstract

This chapter discusses the economic and environmental dimensions of the operation of membrane-based water treatment (WT) technologies, recognizing the increasing global demand for efficient and sustainable WT solutions. The chapter highlights the economic parameters—capital expenditures (CapEx), operational expenses (OpEx), internal rate of return (IRR), net present value (NPV), and payback period (PBP)––necessary to assess financial viability. Life cycle cost assessments (LCCAs) further explain the long-term cost-effectiveness of membrane technologies compared to conventional treatment methods, emphasizing sustainability through waste management, energy optimization, and integration with renewable energy (RE) sources. On the environmental front, the chapter describes strategies for minimizing waste and emissions while optimizing energy consumption. The role of advanced oxidation processes, membrane distillation, and life cycle assessments is explored to mitigate environmental impacts. The integration of RE such as solar and wind is highlighted as a transformative approach to enhancing sustainability and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Comparative analyses between RE-driven and conventional systems reveal significant advantages in cost efficiency, energy savings, and environmental footprint. By incorporating RE into WT processes, membrane technologies demonstrate the potential to achieve environmentally responsive and financially sustainable water security.
