This paper presents a modified layout for a compact 2.4 GHz patch antenna to improve its performance. The antenna is designed for use in wireless communication systems and operates in the Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) band. The proposed antenna layout consists of a rectangular patch with modified feeding and patch structures. The feeding and patch structure are modified by adding of square-shaped slots to reduce surface wave losses and improve radiation efficiency. The antenna is simulated using Advanced design system, and the results show that it achieves a bandwidth of 140 MHz (2.35 GHz to 2.49 GHz) with a gain of 3.22 dBi and an efficiency of 47%. The performance of the optimized antenna is compared with the original antenna design and it is found that the optimized antenna has a lower reflection coefficient equal to −24 dBi.
