Dental Extractions In Patients Under Vitamin-K Antagonists in Morocco

Abstract

The main purpose of this paper is to assess the knowledge and obstacles dentists encounter when performing dental extractions in patients under Vit K antagonists drugs. This is a descriptive cross-sectional study which has involved 90 liberal dentists practising in the Moroccan city of Fez. 93% of dentists reported they can perform dental extractions on patients under Vit-K Antagonists. 51% of them couldn't assess the bleeding risk. However, 25% of dentists feared performing dental extractions when the anti Vit-K drugs treatment is stopped, while 24% of dentists couldn't assess nor manage both risks. Our study has shown a lack of knowledge of dentists on the assessment and management of the bleeding risk for patients under vitamin K antagonists when performing dental extractions, in the city of Fez. In order to enhance the knowledge of dental practitioners, it is highly and urgently recommended to set up continuing dental education programs focused on the latest recommendations regarding the management of patients under Vit K antagonists.
