Data Call Congestion Control on GSM/GPRS Network Using Analytic Models

Abstract

The integration of voice and data services on the Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) network, together with an increased number of subscribers, has increased the volume of data traffic, which involves access to the Internet. This has effectively turned the GSM network into the General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) network. This surge in data call volume has led to a situation where the number of incoming data calls exceeds the available channels for setting up these calls. When this occurs on the GSM/GPRS network, it results in data call/traffic congestion. Data call/traffic congestion is a significant issue because it degrades the network's performance. This paper develops analytical models to measure and control data call/traffic congestion using a novel scheme called the Data Call Duration Control Scheme with Priority Queue Discipline. The results demonstrate its effectiveness in controlling congestion thereby providing subscribers with quality of service.
