Cross Polarization Diversity Employment in a 4×4 MIMO Antenna Design

Abstract

A cross-polarized 4×4 MIMO antenna is presented for radio systems applications. The antenna is composed of four identical monopole elements printed on an FR-4 low-cost laminate. The proposed antenna design is based on the analysis of three 2×2 MIMO antenna configurations. This analysis is based on mutual coupling parameter. Results suggest that Face-to-Face and orthogonal polarized 2×2 MIMO antenna elements configurations are more efficient in terms of reducing electromagnetic coupling between antenna elements compared with side-by-side 2×2 antenna configuration. Face-to-face 2×2 antenna configuration is used for developing a 4×4 MIMO antenna array, and final results prove that the employed configuration is an effective choice for mutual coupling reduction amid high-order MIMO antenna radiating elements.
