COVID-19 vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT): two case reports

Abstract

Introduction: Vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT) was first described in March 2021 after several reported cases of a prothrombotic syndrome following the administration of an adenoviral vector vaccine; this syndrome can be fatal and is associated with high mortality; its pathophysiology is not yet fully elucidated. Case report: We report two cases of patients of ages 17 and 27 years who were admitted for the management of VITT following COVID-19 vaccination; the outcome was rapidly fatal for one of them. Discussion: In this paragraph, we describe this poorly known syndrome, its incidence and implications, as well as the suggested pathophysiology, before discussing treatment modalities. Conclusion: VITT remains exceptional but very serious; health professionals must remain vigilant toward patients who manifest evocative symptoms.
