Comparative study of alluvial clay-based stoneware ceramic's properties using cocoa cortex ash and syenite as fluxing agents

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the influence of cocoa cortex ash (CCA) compare to syenite (SY) on the technological properties of stoneware ceramics. Mixtures of clay powders (EB) and each flux were prepared in ratios of 90/10, 80/20, and 70/30, and then sintered at 1100 °C. Obtained samples were characterized by water absorption (WA), bulk density (BD), and flexural strength (FS). For mixtures of EB and SY, the sample containing 30 % SY and 70 % EB demonstrated favorable properties, including WA of 3.87 %, BD of 2.37 g/cm3, and FS of 29.6 MPa. For the mixtures of EB and CCA, the sample with 10 % CCA showed interesting properties, with a WA of 2 %, BD of 2.41 g/cm3, and FS of 32 MPa. Based on the ISO 13006 standard, sample with 10 % CCA exhibited the characteristics of vitrified stoneware, while samples containing SY displayed characteristics of semi-vitrified stoneware.
