Comparative Analysis of Evolving Trends in Architecture and Design Documentation Processes towards Sustainability in Nigeria and Other Advanced Countries (2015–2025)

Abstract

This study examines evolving trends in architectural and design documentation processes toward sustainability in Nigeria and selected advanced countries between 2015 and 2025. The study aimed to investigate the influence of digital technologies, sustainability integration, interdisciplinary collaboration, and cultural responsiveness on contemporary architectural documentation practices. A qualitative descriptive research design was adopted using a systematic review of scholarly literature, industry reports, and selected case studies. Data were collected from peer-reviewed publications, professional reports, and sustainability-related documentation frameworks and were analyzed through thematic content analysis. Findings reveal that Building Information Modeling (BIM), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and 3D scanning technologies have significantly improved design accuracy, collaboration, lifecycle data management, and sustainability assessment. However, Nigeria continues to face challenges related to inadequate infrastructure, limited technical expertise, financial constraints, and weak policy support. The study concludes that digital transformation has become essential for achieving sustainable architectural outcomes and enhancing documentation quality. It recommends increased investment in digital infrastructure, professional capacity development, stronger regulatory frameworks, and institutional collaboration to accelerate the adoption of sustainable documentation practices in Nigeria.
