Chlorophyll-a is a critical indicator of phytoplankton biomass and water quality in aquatic ecosystems. This study presents a comparative analysis of chlorophyll-a concentration across key dams in South Africa, focusing on the Bloemhof Dam and Vaal Dam. These water bodies play a vital role in South Africa's domestic, industrial, and agricultural water supply and are subject to various anthropogenic impacts. Using remote sensing techniques, we examine the spatial and temporal variations in chlorophyll-a levels to assess nutrient enrichment, eutrophication, and overall ecosystem health. The comparison between the dams offers insights into the dynamics of nutrient loading and the processes influencing chlorophyll-a concentrations, such as water flow, nutrient sources, and human activities. This research highlights the benefits and challenges of monitoring chlorophyll-a in dammed water bodies. Analysis like the Modified Normalized Difference Water Index (MNDWI), the Chlorophyll-a and precipitation correlation were measured. The findings revealed a varying concentration in chlorophyll-a in both dams as it has influences water quality. This underscores the importance of chlorophyll-a as a tool for managing water resources and mitigating environmental risks, particularly in regions experiencing rapid urbanization and agricultural expansion. Recommendations are made for improving water quality monitoring and policy interventions aimed at reducing nutrient pollution and safeguarding aquatic ecosystems.
