Channel Capacity Estimation of Four UWB MIMO antennas

Abstract

Four Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) antenna assemblies for Ultra Wideband (UWB) applications are discussed. The performance discussion of MIMO antenna arrays of interest is performed in terms of channel capacity loss (CCL). Moreover, the estimation of the four MIMO antennas ergodic channel capacity is deduced. Measurements show that both two-element and quad-element MIMO antennas are characterized by a channel capacity loss that is lower than 0.05 bits/s/Hz. While the measured total capacity loss is less than 0.15 bits/s/Hz for 6×6 MIMO and 8×8 MMO assemblies over the whole operating frequency band, which corresponds to Ultra WideBand (UWB), and which ranges from 3.1 to 10.6 GHz. Also, channel capacity measurements show that the results conform well with the mathematical formula since the channel capacity of each presented MIMO antenna array increases linearly as a function of the minimum value of the number of transmitting and receiving antennas.
