Case report: Two cases of ileo-ileal and colo-colic intussusceptions revealing Vanek's tumor

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Intestinal obstruction represents a surgical emergency requiring urgent diagnosis and treatment. Vanek's tumor or inflammatory fibroid polyp (IFP) is a rare benign gastrointestinal tumor. This tumor is responsible for intestinal obstructions and rarely bleeding. CASE REPORT: We report two cases of Vanek's tumor. The first was a 58-year-old woman with intestinal obstruction confirmed in computed tomography scan, the patient had an emergency laparotomy with bowel resection, the histopathological examination showed a polyp measuring 3.5 cm. The postoperative course was simple with no medico-surgical complications. The second case is a 22-year-old man with no significant pathological history who presented with colocolic intussusception and who underwent a left colectomy. DISCUSSION: Vanek's tumor is a rare tumor of the digestive tract. It is a benign tumor with no malignant potential, which can be asymptomatic or complicated by intestinal intussusception. Treatment is based on endoscopic resection when the tumor is small, or surgical resection in the case of complications. CONCLUSION: Intestinal intussusception is a rare cause of intestinal obstruction in adults. IFP is a rare, benign tumor, which preferentially affects the stomach and ileum, and it can be responsible for serious complications.
