Bridging Knowledge And Attitudes Gaps: Effect Of Premarital Counseling Interventions On Non-Medical University Students

Abstract

Background: Premarital counseling represents a key preventive approach for reducing the risk of genetic diseases, congenital abnormalities, and various medical, psychosocial, and marital problems. It also offers an opportunity for early intervention based on the risks identified during assessment. Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness of premarital counseling interventions on knowledge and attitudes on non-medical university students. Design: A quasi-experimental research design was employed, utilizing a single-group pre/posttest intervention conducted on randomly selected sample of 200 students from faculty of arts laws and the faculty of education. Tools: Two tools were utilized to collect data. The first tool included demographic characteristic and the knowledge about premarital counseling. The second tool included the attitude tool regarding premarital counseling. Results: The most of student had satisfactory total knowledge score increased from 20% to 92.5% post intervention. In addition, the positive attitude increased from 44.2% to 88.1% post premarital counseling interventions.Conclusion: The study concluded that the premarital counseling intervention effectively improved both knowledge and attitudes among non-medical university students, with higher knowledge levels associated with more positive attitudes. Recommendation: Implementing ongoing premarital counseling interventions for both medical and nonmedical university students to enhance their knowledge and positively shape their attitudes.
