Bioreactors and Engineered Systems for Microbial Remediation

Abstract

Life on Earth solely depends on the state and quality of its environments. Technological advancements, unsustainable agricultural practices and industrialization are the contributing factors that influence the quality of life on earth. Industrialization and urbanization have immensely transformed the biosphere. However, there are certain drawbacks that we can highlight through these transformations. These include the diminution of natural resources, accumulation of pollutants and increased agro-industrial emissions such as chemicals, pesticides, chemical-based fertilizers and petroleum hydrocarbons. Recent advancements such as smart bioreactors, the use of genetically engineered microorganisms, and integrated treatment systems are at the forefront of modern bioremediation efforts and have expanded the versatility of microbial remediation. This chapter explores some of the advances in the use of bioreactors and engineered systems for microbial bioremediation in In-situ and Ex-situ applications for optimum removal of environmental pollutants.
