Abstract Background: Mycoplasma gallisepticum is associated with respiratory diseases, reduced egg production, poor feed efficiency, increased mortality, and morbidity in poultry. This study examined global trends in M. gallisepticum research, and highlights research gaps and provides recommendations for future research areas. Methods: Scopus and Web of Science databases were searched covering the period from January 2004 to December 2024. RStudio (v4.3.2) with the Biblioshiny interface was used for data analyses. The research articles were analysed based on authorship, institutions, publication year, citations per year, countries, collaboration networks, themes, and research areas. Results: A total of 1,171 articles were analysed, and there was a significant increase in M. gallisepticum research output over the past two decades. However, the number of citations per year remained relatively stable during the same period. Most published research articles were from the USA, followed by China. Collaborative networks were strongest among institutions in North America and Asia. Cornell University (USA) published the highest number of articles on M. gallisepticum. The most highly cited articles focused on pathogenesis, diagnosis, vaccine development, and antibiotic resistance. Trends indicate a growing interest in molecular diagnostics and genomic studies of M. gallisepticum. Conclusion: The results showed an increasing trend in M. gallisepticum research, particularly in PCR diagnostics, epidemiology, signal transduction, antibiotic resistance, and host–pathogen interactions. The USA and China remain the leading contributors in M. gallisepticum research, possibly reflecting greater research funding capacity. Emerging collaborators with low- and middle-income countries were also identified which deserve further support.
