Beyond survival: malaria-associated acute kidney injury

Abstract

In this issue of The Lancet Global Health, Kagan A Mellencamp and colleagues report that children who survive severe malaria complicated by acute kidney injury (AKI) have three times the risk of major adverse kidney events, four times the risk for mortality 2 years after discharge, and an elevated likelihood of subsequent chronic kidney disease (CKD).1 Their findings shift attention from the immediate question of survival to the longer term question of kidney health after survival. This reframing is timely.
