Plants as the producer in the ecosystem do not only produce energy but also the source of different types of phytochemicals and metabolites. Different plant species have different nature and composition of metabolites. These metabolites can either be primary or secondary metabolites and it is somewhat hard to differentiate. This is because most metabolites occur as secondary metabolites. Secondary metabolites are essential for various reasons, especially as it has been beneficial in medicinal, environmental, and agricultural sectors. Plants have been documented to produce various beneficial products which some of it are already on the market or under trail. With the increasing rate of diseases and technological advancements, there is need for researchers to improve in their search for more metabolites and their beneficial roles in various sectors. This also include understanding the various synthesis of these beneficial plant metabolites at commercial level as a result of the complex chemical composition of these phytochemicals. In the present review, we consider the different aspects of plants metabolites including the primary and secondary metabolites, sources of the metabolites, methods of synthesis, as well as the beneficial aspects of the metabolites related to various aspects of human society.
