Association between Triglyceride-Glucose Index and Hepatic Steatosis and Fibrosis in Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease in Egyptian People

Abstract

Abstract Background Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is increasingly becoming a major health burden. Due to the difficulty of liver biopsy, there is no reliable indicator to evaluate the outcomes of NAFLD. The triglyceride–glucose (TyG) index is a simple and convenient marker of insulin resistance for use in medical practice. Aim and Objectives To examine the association between triglyceride-glucose index and hepatic steatosis and fibrosis in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in a sample of Egyptian adults. Subjects and Methods This was Observational prospective study, was conducted at Al Sahel Teaching Hospital, Gastroenterology and hepatology “outpatient clinic”, on 100 supjects divided after history, labs and ultrasound to 50 case with NAFLD and 50 healthy control, from January 2022 to July 2022. Result There were significant difference between both groups as regard Fasting blood sugar, TGS and TyG-index. Conclusion The TyG index is an independent risk factor for hepatic steatosis and the presence of liver fibrosis in participants with NAFLD. Compared with other IR markers, the TyG index is easy to calculate, and the testing cost is inexpensive.
