Artificial intelligence for international business: Its use, challenges, and suggestions for future research and practice

202469 citationsOpen accessUniversity of Ghana

In plain language

Artificial intelligence has significantly altered global business practices by enhancing operational efficiency and driving innovation through machine learning and big data analytics. These capabilities enable predictive market analysis and inform strategic decision-making. Despite the wider availability of artificial intelligence tools, comprehension of their full impact on international business operations remains restricted. A review of thirty-seven studies examines how artificial intelligence influences global strategies, including foreign market selection, market entry modes, foreign exchange, human resource management, and international supply chain operations. The technology also affects cross-cultural management and requires adjustments to workplace configurations, organisational structures, and employee roles. Integrating artificial intelligence across international business functions introduces distinct operational hurdles and managerial implications that necessitate further research alongside practical workplace adaptation.

Key takeaways

  • Artificial intelligence drives operational efficiency, predictive market trend analysis, and strategic decision-making through machine learning and big data analytics.
  • Applications of artificial intelligence in global business span international market selection, entry mode decisions, foreign exchange, supply chains, and cross-cultural management.
  • The adoption of artificial intelligence requires substantial workplace reconfigurations as well as organisational and employee adjustments.
  • Current understanding of how artificial intelligence influences international business remains limited, highlighting the need for further research and practical guidance.

Why it matters

As global trade becomes increasingly reliant on digital tools, understanding the operational and managerial impact of artificial intelligence is vital. Identifying how machine learning influences decisions from supply chains to cross-border hiring helps global organisations anticipate structural changes, navigate international market complexities, and prepare their workforce for automated systems.

Commercialisation angle

This research synthesises existing literature rather than testing a specific product, placing it at a conceptual, early stage. The insights can guide multinational enterprises, international trade practitioners, and corporate strategists seeking to apply artificial intelligence tools to supply chain management, foreign exchange tracking, and market selection. However, the abstract indicates that practical implementation still requires addressing notable organisational and workplace challenges.

Abstract

Abstract The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) has transformed global business, aiding operational efficiency and innovation. It utilizes machine learning and big data analytics, driving predictive market trends and strategic decision‐making. However, despite the rising discussion and accessibility of AI tools, understanding its impact on international business remains limited. This article explores AI's potential in international business strategies, practices, and activities. To address this aim, we reviewed 37 articles in the existing literature to critically explore AI within the context of international business. More specifically, we explored how AI can be applied to innovation approaches in international business, international market selection, entry modes, foreign exchange, international human resource management, international supply chains, managing across cultures, and more topics. AI has necessitated changes in workplace configurations and the need for organizational and employee adjustments in response to this technology. As a result of the foregoing issues on AI integration within international business, our analysis provided an exploratory discussion around its use, challenges, managerial implications, and suggested areas requiring future studies.
