Arms Proliferation and Separatist Agitations in Nigeria: Challenges and Potential Solutions

Abstract

The- study focused on the serious threats to stability and unity in Nigeria are posed by arms proliferation and increased separatist agitations. Some of the historical grievances underpinning these challenges, such as economic inequalities and political marginalization. The study also noted the main protagonists in this discussion are the separatist leaders Nnamdi Kanu and Sunday Igboho, whose activities have brought these issues to the fore. The study employed qualitative study and data were sourced thorough secondary sources, data obtained from historical documents, government reports, and scholarly literature. The paper found out that there is a nexus, between arms proliferation, separatist movements, and Nigeria's security. The paper identifies various mechanisms such as opening lines of communication, devolution of power, constitutional reforms, and economic development with equity as interventions to these challenges. Third, international cooperation will be brought into the equation to defeat the transnational dimensions of arms trafficking and separatist activities. Success in this interlinked set of challenges opens up a window toward a more stable, united, and prosperous future for Nigeria.
