An unusual case of diffuse glabrous skin dermatophytosis caused by Trichophyton tonsurans in a limited-resource setting: A case report

Abstract

Trichophyton tonsurans is an anthropophilic dermatophyte increasingly reported in several regions worldwide, reflecting its expanding epidemiological distribution and growing public health importance. This fungal agent is associated with outbreaks that are difficult to control. We report here the first published case in Burkina Faso of diffuse glabrous skin dermatophytosis caused by T. tonsurans in a socioeconomically disadvantaged patient prescribed a treatment regimen consisting of miconazole cream and oral terbinafine, highlighting the challenges of post-treatment follow-up. • Trichophyton tonsurans is an emerging mycosis. • This fungal agent is associated with outbreaks. • First case of diffuse glabrous skin dermatophytosis. • Challenges of post-treatment follow-up in Burkina Faso.
