An In-Depth Review of Biomass for Sustainable Energy Generation in Nigeria's Context

Abstract

The escalating demand for energy and its associated services to propel human societal and eco-nomic advancement, well-being, and health is witnessing a notable upsurge. Consequently, there's an intensified call for sustainable energy sources as traditional fossil fuel reserves diminish and contribute to climate change. Biomass, an accessible and renewable resource, presents sub-stantial potential for sustainable energy production. This study assesses biomass's viability as a renewable energy source in Nigeria, encompassing factors such as availability, technological progress, environmental impacts, and socio-economic implications. Nigeria boasts abundant biomass resources, spanning agricultural and forestry residues and municipal solid waste, of-fering significant prospects for biomass energy generation. Effectively harnessing these resources could significantly bolster the nation's energy composition while diminishing reliance on fossil fuels. The analysis also explores biomass energy's capacity to generate employment, particularly in biomass-rich rural areas. Moreover, the research delves into advancements in biomass con-version technologies like combustion, gasification, and anaerobic digestion, examining how these innovative approaches can be integrated into existing energy infrastructure and grid systems to enable the widespread adoption of biomass energy on a large scale in Nigeria.
