An Evaluation of Health Data Accessibility and Sharing Features of Smartwatches used by South Africans

Abstract

Smartwatches are seen as a health technology that motivates users to improve their health and achieve their goals through personal data-based insights related to exercise, eating, sleep patterns and the self-management of medical conditions. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate data accessibility and sharing features for the most popular smartwatch platforms used by South Africans. A document analysis was conducted using manufacturer documentation and websites, followed by a comparison of the smartwatch platforms' data accessibility and sharing features. A subset of the information quality (InfQual) and system quality (SysQual) dimensions of the DeLone and McLean Information Systems Success Model was used as the criteria to evaluate these features. The findings revealed that Garmin presented the most accessibility options regarding file formats, while Huawei was shown to have the least. Apple presented the most data sharing functionality, flexibility, and relevance. The InfQual and SysQual criteria are important elements to consider in the data management of smartwatches, which can contribute to improving the usage and ultimately the success of these devices in managing users' health.
