Algorithmic anxiety: AI, work, and the evolving psychological contract in digital discourse

Abstract

This study adds to psychological contract theory by illustrating ways that technology can breach an individual's psychological contract at work. In addition, this study extends existing technostress literature by identifying specific sources of stress associated with AI use in the workplace. Finally, it applies self-determination theory to work settings where algorithms are shaping the work environment. Practically speaking, the findings suggest that employers who wish to address the growing problem of "algorithmic anxiety" should engage in transparent communication, involve employees in decision-making, and design their technological systems to preserve employee dignity in increasingly automated workplaces.
